Mental health is essential for our well-being and happiness.

A wise person once said, “A sound person creates a sound environment for not only them but also for people around them.” When we live in a sound environment, we can share our positive energy with others and find solutions to our problems. This is how the cycle of wellness works. But if even one person is struggling with their mental health, the whole cycle gets disrupted and the ‘cycle of wellness’ becomes the ‘cycle of illness’.

Mental health challenges are ‘real challenges’. Mental illness is a real kind of illness. You may have been suffering from it for a long time, but not realize it or deny it. Your loved ones need your support. It is not something that will go away on its own. You need to give them time to heal. You need to give yourself time to heal. You need to love and be loved.

Mental health has often been stigmatized as something ‘evil’ that resides inside a person. It is seen as something a person has been cursed with. Various harmful practices such as exorcism (removal of the evil spirit that resides in an individual by using various ‘mantras’ by the shaman who is believed to have contact with supernatural forces and is the medium through which spirits communicate with human beings) are used. It is a fact that such practices not only worsen the symptoms of the mental illness the person is experiencing, but also expose the person to extreme amounts of stress and pain. Their trauma, even when they try to heal, remains unhealed to a great extent. Not only valuable resources are wasted, but the precious time of the person, during which they could reflect on themselves and find rational, emotional solutions to their problems is also wasted. The unhealed person looks in the mirror with regret and says, ‘My body that contains the mind that I nurtured for so many years is being filled with their thoughts, they who don’t trust me, love me or understand me. Merely an object to them, I too see myself as an object that now has no purpose left in life.

Mental health affects every aspect of our lives. Mental health challenges are not specific to any gender or age. Anyone from any age group can face mental health challenges at any point in their lives. An adolescent, a young adult, a middle-aged adult, an old adult are all susceptible and vulnerable to mental health challenges, for various reasons. It is okay if you are feeling disturbed, having an identity crisis.

It is okay if you are confused about your career and your relationships in your life are not stable. It is okay if you are facing employment issues. You are doing what you love and you will surely succeed one day. It is okay if you have been bestowed with many family responsibilities. It is understandable that it is really tough for you. You are not a liability, you are an asset. Things will surely fall in place soon. You have financial and security and one day you will feel it too.
